CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Roman Harper spent nine NFL seasons playing strong safety for the New Orleans Saints being coached by Sean Payton. He spent two playing strong safety for the Carolina Panthers with Steve Wilks as his position coach.
He helped each reach the Super Bowl, the Saints winning Super Bowl XLIV (2009 season) and Panthers losing Super Bowl 50 (2015).
As much as Harper believes Wilks should be a "layup" to go from interim head coach to full time after leading the Panthers to a 6-6 record in 2022, he understands why owner David Tepper is in New York City on Friday to interview Payton, the former NFL coach who remains under contract with the Saints.
